THE HALLWAY

Green Hallway

The hallway awaits.

It beckons.

It calls.

Doors line either side.

Shrill cries fill the air.

Cold creeps into my bones.

Then silence descends.

peek into the first room.

Empty wheelchairs face me.

Except for one.

It turns, rolls to me,

then stops.

I freeze.

The lights flash.

A table appears at the far wall.

A bright surgical light hangs above.

The men in white coats face me.

I open my mouth to scream.

I’m strapped to the table.

The men in white peer at me.

A drill whirls next to my ear.

I struggle against the thick straps.

The room goes black.

DEAD SILENCE

Oasis Hotel Pool

Silence reigns supreme.

The sun hides its face.

Palm trees shake their leaves.

Winds quicken their pace.

The hotel stands deserted.

Flapping sounds fill the air.

Dark shadows join the fray

Beneath his icy stare.

THE DEAD GAME

THEY EXIST

Of course, they do.

Who else keeps you awake at night?

Who haunts your nightmares?

Your mother-in-law?

No.

It’s The Dead.

They walk the streets of Oasis.

They take their victims with stealth and finesse.

Find them in THE DEAD GAME SERIES.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

BY THE SEA

Come with me to the pool by the sea.
Oasis is the best place to be.
Relax by the pool or sit at the bar.
Tourists visit this place from near and far.

I think I’ll take a dip in the pool.
I am definitely not a fool.
I’d never pass up a chance for fun
Or a tan in the Florida sun.

Wait. Come and look over here.
I found a book on the chair.
A small town is a beautiful place.
I see the stunned look on your face.

Oasis Hotel resembles this one.
But it isn’t always fun in the sun.
It is a haven for The Dead.
Is the heat going to your head?

The sky is turning cloudy and dark.
I can see shadows over the park.
What’s that standing behind you?
It’s not one shadow but two.

More shadows are coming ashore.
I’m not going to wait for more.
Our destiny seems to be in this book.
I’m leaving now without a second look.

PAST THE POINT OF NO RETURN

Down the rabbit hole we go,

Far beneath the earth’s surface,

Where The Dead wait for their savior,

Arms extended,

Reaching for us,

Mouths held open in silent cries

As we fall farther,

Deeper,

Past the point of no return.

THE DEAD GAME

THE DEAD GAME

I leave the storefronts behind,

the tinted windows reflecting the fading sunlight.

I race to the boardwalk

and descend the steps to the beach.

The soft sand trickles through my toes.

The wind propels me forward.

Beyond the white sand,

the waves thrash in a demented dance.

I return to Main Street to find my friends.

The palm trees bow their heads to the wind.

Rooftops sail over my head.

Glass crunches beneath my feet

as I run through the streets.

The windows hang broken and twisted.

The saddest sight is the church.

The once-white church stands charcoal-black,

debris at its proud feet.

They’re here.

The deadly games have begun.

THE DEAD GAME

MY HEART’S SONG

Darkness brings a pall to town.

I turn around with a frown.

Soft footsteps echo on the street,

I know whom I’m destined to meet.

I should have listened to my heart’s song,

Listened to reason and right from wrong.

THE FIRE BURNING IN HER HEART

The flames racing across the boardwalk at Chateau Frontenac

are nothing compared to the fire burning in Shana’s heart.

THE DEAD AT HEART

by Susanne Leist

A GOODBYE KISS

My love has gone astray.

I don’t believe I can stay.

As moans fill the night air,

I must depart his snare.

He gives me a goodbye kiss,

then he’s gone with a hiss.

THE SEA RUNS RED

At the end of the journey,

where the sea runs red,

the nights grow long,

dark shadows roam free,

and The Dead come to play.
