READ A BOOK

In a quiet spot.

On a soft chair.

In the sun’s spotlight.

I will read a book.

Eyes wide open.

Mind ready to explore.

Sunlight streaming.

I will read a book.

Hands trembling.

Tears falling.

Sun warming my body.

I will read a book.

A BOOK IS A TREASURE

A long journey to become an author,
Days of soul searching and hard work.
The words need to be enticing and clear,
A bridge to the reader’s heart.

A movie camera sweeps across scenes,
So does a book’s point of view.
One point of view shows one angle
While changing points of view reveal more.

To be lost in a book is indeed a gift,
An escape from the mundane and boring.
A visit to far away places can be
An adventure to open your mind’s eye.

Once completed, a book is a treasure,
A symbol of the author’s hopes and dreams.
A confectioner’s delight to be tasted and savored,
To be remembered by the many or just a few.

SHADOWS IN THE WOODS

The full moon casts its harsh light,

Spotlights to the left and right.

Shadows drift in the trees.

Some even on their knees.

On the shallow lake,

they cast their cold gaze.

Reflections of bones

Flicker in the haze.

While the small town sleeps,

They walk the dark streets.

They ready for their fight.

Their march a deadly sight.

Soft snores won’t deter them.

Children’s cries won’t halt them.

From the woods, they have come.

They will return as one.

THE DEAD GAME by Susanne Leist

PARADISE

Shadows in the dark-2

There’s paradise in Oasis, Florida.
Sun-drenched beaches by day,
Moonlight beaches by night,
A paradise to be shared by all.
Come and enjoy the sleepy nights.
The cooling sea breezes that
Bring mysterious shadows.
Dark shadows that walk
The deserted streets of the town.
All is quiet.
All is dark.
Except for the footsteps.
“Who goes there?”
We ask behind our closed shutters.
No one answers.
Only footsteps.
Who will be alive come morning?

THE DEAD GAME

TO BE OR NOT TO BE

book flames

To be or not to be a writer
has been the hardest question for me.
Should I continue with my pursuit,
or step away and claim defeat?
One book was written,
one book sold.
It dances around on Amazon and Nook.
It reaches new heights in its niche,
and then it slowly bows its head in silence.
The highs feel good and lofty,
While the lows feel depressing and sad.
Is it worth it?
Is it worth the aggravation?
I am told that a writer must keep writing.
More books to dance around.
More highs and lows.
Should I keep doing this?
Will I keep doing this?
Yes, for now
as I wait for the next high.

“Ms. Barret writes with creative abandon, coloring outside the lines of the traditional supernatural with bold strokes and an incredible imagination…You guessed it, this is a brilliant gem with a fiery glow that needs to be read!”

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightfully Creepy Gothic Mystery, 30 Mar. 2017
By

This review is from: The Dead Game (Paperback)
I read this in one sitting, because I couldn’t stop turning pages. The story is well done to say the least. Leist weaves together a gothic horror story that includes both good and evil vampires. Unlike many stories that include vampires, The Dead Game focuses on our human heroines and their efforts to solve the mysteries of Oasis Florida.

Keeping to the format for good gothic horror, Leist introduces a tantalizing romantic element. The haunted house had a personality all its own. Be certain to read the prologue to catch the house’s seductive side.

If you like good gothic horror this ranks right up there with Anne Rice and Radcliff.

This review has renewed my determination to complete book 2 of The Dead Game. It’s amazing that just when you’re about to give up, something like this comes along to reaffirm your faith in yourself.
Thank you, Flowergirl, whoever you are.
