An ode to my journey becoming a writer.

TO BE OR NOT TO BE

Nothing can be as fine

as the dear book of mine.

It might not be sold in a big bookstore,

but you will not find one to offer more.

It was created with much love and hope,

even though it wasn’t blessed by a Pope.

It has my blood, sweat, and tears.

Might raise many of your fears.

It has action, murder, and romance.

It can even do a little dance.

Please try it, and you’ll see

It has the best of me.

The journey to become an author has been rocky. It began as an idea, a way to sharpen my brain. If it didn’t work out, then I could call it a hobby. But inside, I knew my wish was much more than a whim.

As I grew up, watching my brother’s success from the sidelines, I dreamt of becoming a high-powered corporate executive. This goal accompanied me through high school, college, and graduate school.

After my brother’s death and without him at my side, my dream soon flickered and died. As a woman in business in the eighties, I faced closed doors. Asked again and again when I might start my family, I became frustrated. Then my Sabbath observance caused me to leave the job I liked best, as a Budget Analyst at the Office of Management and Budget of NYC.

I worked part-time jobs in my neighborhood as I raised my two daughters. Married with their own families, I now have the time to pursue a new dream. Reading has brought comfort over the years, as an escape from problems. I love mysteries and thrillers, so I wrote a mystery.

My first book, THE DEAD GAME, began as a murder mystery. In the town of Oasis, my main characters uncover dead bodies and dark secrets. The story has clues, victims, and suspects as the traditional murder mystery. But many players are dead walkers.

For THE DEAD GAME, I used a self-publisher. Outskirts Press charged high fees and held onto my book’s template. They held it hostage for $500. If I want to change the book, I have to pay them to do it. I believe I’ve found a way around their ploy, but it will take time to convert the messy text to the correct format. This is my next project.

My second book, PREY FOR THE DEAD, I published without help. A graphic artist designed the cover. The Vellum formatting program converted the text. After research online, I bought an ISBN number and submitted the book and its cover for copyright.

The road to becoming an author was long, but it was worth it. My writing has improved. My favorite editing program, ProWriting Aid, is my constant companion. With my tools and my imagination, I have what I need. I’m ready to write the third book in THE DEAD GAME Trilogy.

SUSANNE LEIST BIO

I have always loved to read. Agatha Christie, Alistair Maclean, Robert Ludlum, and many other authors filled my young imagination with intrigue and mystery. When I wasn’t reading late into the night, the TV shows—Murder She Wrote and Columbo—entertained me with tales of murder and suspense.

Over the years, my taste in TV expanded to include such shows as Supernatural and The Originals. I searched for paranormal, murder mysteries but found few at the library or bookstore. So, I wrote one.

A career in writing has been a big leap for me. Accustomed to the number-crunching field of budgeting and the hectic commodity markets, I left my first career and M.B.A. in Finance behind to pursue my dream. I do not regret my foray into literature for one moment. Fellow authors helped me make my way through the competitive field. I write every day and even tried my hand at poetry. If someone tells you it’s too late in life to try something different, they are wrong. It is never too late to follow your heart.

The Dead Game is the first book in The Dead Game series. It brings fantasy and the surreal to the classic murder mystery with dead bodies, suspects, and clues. It offers vampires, vampire derivatives, and a touch of romance to give spice to the mix. Once you read The Dead Game, you will never look at a dead body the same way.

In Book Two, Prey for The Dead, the suspense continues as The Dead use an exclusive club in Disney World and infiltrate the rich and famous. The Dead grow in power, and not even the sun or the swamps of Florida can weaken them. Linda–my main character–and her friends join with the human vampires or hybrids to defeat the evil forces threatening to control their town.

I hope you enjoy my books. The third book of The Dead Game Series is waiting for me to write.

Meet Susanne Leist

Thank you for being with us. Please Introduce yourself.

Hi. My name is Susanne Leist. I am the author of The Dead Game series.

What’s the story behind the title?

The Dead Game series takes place in the fictional setting of Oasis, Florida. Oasis is nestled on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean with white sand and picturesque homes. Tourists visit for the warm weather and the fancy Oasis Hotel, which caters to the rich and famous. The nights bring another story. Dark shadows roam the streets while mysterious parties are held in the woods behind the town.

Why did you write this book?

My recent interest in the paranormal enticed me to write paranormal suspense in an exotic location. I wanted to combine suspense, mystery, and romance.

How do you keep the reader’s attention?

Readers won’t have time to let their attention wander. The action is non-stop. The twists and turns will keep them guessing to the bitter end.

How did you come up with this book idea?

My idea began with a deserted house. Lured to this mansion with a promise of a party, my main character, Linda, and her friends are confronted with traps and illusions. The story takes a supernatural turn once the residents who keep hidden during the day appear after dark and a dead body washes ashore. I didn’t know I would be entering the paranormal realm until my characters did.

What publishing elements do you most enjoy and most like to avoid, and why? (e.g., design, marketing, formatting, etc.)

I love writing and marketing. Editing is done along the way. I am always making changes and editing. After the book is completed, I use professional help for further editing and formatting.

What’s next on your writing journey?

I finished writing the second book in the series. I’m still editing. Soon I will forward it to an editor.

Where would my audience find your book?

My book is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble in e-book and paperback.

Soon to be released in 2018.

A town where the snow is black,
bringing coldness and fear.
Old remnants of tears held back,
and times too hard to bear.

Woven from black sheets of rain,
fear covers in disarray.
Anguished and frozen with pain,
dark petals fall in dismay.

Hell has come to Oasis,
The Dead and gone at its side.
Now hidden behind faces
that are well-known far and wide.

Who will fall prey to The Dead?
I hope it is not me.
I’m hiding under my bed.
I’m afraid as I can be.

The Book Fair is coming to the town of Oasis on the northern coast of Florida. A dead body washes ashore. The police search through the sand for clues. Where is Agatha Christie when you need her? Linda and her friends are afraid. Deaths and disappearances are happening too often in Oasis. Will they figure out who is controlling their small town? Who is playing the evil game, The Dead Game?

I’m a mystery lover. And so is my protagonist, Linda Bennett. She opens a bookstore in Oasis, hoping for fantasy and romance. Instead, she finds herself living in a community filled with secrets. THE DEAD GAME CONTINUES — PRELUDE TO BOOK II

I must see if End House is still standing.
I was there when the house was destroyed.
When the evil creatures were dragged
From the windows by our chanting
And cast into the raging sea.

The house had disappeared before my eyes.
But yet, one section had remained standing,
Before becoming transparent,
And then poof,
It was gone for good.

I’m on a mission to see if the house is truly gone.
No one else happened to notice the shadowy section
That had hovered and wavered until it dissolved.
But I know it’s still there.
I need to know.

The forest is quiet.
I don’t hear birds chirping.
I’m alone but I can feel eyes watching me.
I should’ve parked closer to the house.
I don’t remember the path snaking around the trees.

Here’s the black fence with its spikes pointing upward.
Not a comfortable place for birds.
How convenient, the gate is wide open.
All I have to do is walk through the trees.
No gloomy house should be waiting for me.

There is something up ahead.
A large shadow in the mist.
It must be the pool.
It can’t be.
The house can’t be back.

I can see through it to the trees beyond.
The sky is growing darker by the minute.
The shadowy house is beginning to fade away.
It’s dissolving into the ground,
Like it had done on that other fateful night.

All that remains is a deep hole.
Why did I come alone?
I don’t want to check out the hole.
I don’t want to be here.
I’m leaving.

Where did these heavy gusts of wind come from?
It was such a nice and balmy evening.
Now the winds are blowing their heads off.

The trees are thrashing their branches at me.
They won’t let me leave.

I’m being bounced from one tree to the next,
Like a football being tossed around.
“Stop it! Let me go!”
They don’t listen to my cries.
I believe they are laughing at me.

“Here’s that!” I jab my foot into a thick root.
The tree stretches out its branch to swipe at me.
“No please! Save me!”
Too late.
I’m falling down the dark hole.

I can’t grab hold of anything firm.
The sides are too slippery.

Rocks and dirt are falling on me.
I can’t stop myself from sliding down.
This was such a bad idea.

I’m falling too fast.
No light is coming from above.
It’s just me and the darkness, my old friend.
The darkness can’t save me now.
Nothing can save me now.

I feel dizzy.
I’m being twirled in circles by the wind.
Round and round I go.
Where I’ll stop, nobody knows.
The silly things that enter your head at the end.

I’ve hit rock bottom.
I’m sore.
My bottom hurts.
And I don’t know
Where the hell I am.

Author Interview with Susanne Leist, Paranormal Mystery Writer

I’m sharing this interview again since it is one of my favorites.

Author Interview with Susanne Leist, Paranormal Mystery Writer

ProfileHello, everyone! Welcome to today’s author interview with paranormal mystery/thriller author Susanne Leist! Susanne has always had a passion for writing and has achieved her life-long goal of writing her debut novel. Please stick around and discover her and her book, The Dead Game.

Hello, Susanne! Can you start by telling us a little about yourself?

After college, I worked in the fields of commodities, financial analysis, and budgeting. I went back to school for an M.B.A. in Finance. But my creative side had been calling out to me for years, wanting to be set free. I finally listened to it and wrote my first book, The Dead Game, a paranormal mystery/thriller with vampires and vampire derivatives.

I am married with two beautiful daughters. My oldest is married and works as a buyer for an internet company. My second is graduating from college and will go on to graduate school for social work.

My life is complete.

What’s your writing background?

My writing background is my love for the written word. I have been reading adult books since the age of ten. When I say adult books, I am referring to the murder mysteries that my older brother was reading at the time. He devoured books, a few each week. I followed him into the magic world of books. He read Agatha Christie, Dashiell Hammett, and Alistair Maclean and so did I.

I wrote my book to honor his memory. It took me ten long years to hone my craft. I had to begin at step one and teach myself through editing and grammar books the proper way to write. I hope I made him proud.

When it comes to reviews, do you have a thick skin? How do you handle negative feedback?

I’ve never had a thick skin. I’m sensitive about my feelings and other people’s feelings. I find it hard to give a bad review. I could always find something good to say about a book. But I received a few poor reviews, at the beginning.

These reviews were from fellow authors in review groups. At first, I was hurt and discouraged. Then I noticed a trend to them. They were criticizing the same few things about my book. I was telling too much of the story and not showing the reader enough. I was using too many adverbs. I studied these reviews and read more editing books. My book had been edited by Outskirts Press, but I edited it again.

I believe my book is done. I’m happy with it. It is all what I had dreamed it could be. My reviews have been good so far—fingers crossed.

What inspires your stories? What draws you to your preferred genre?

I’ve always loved to read murder mysteries. I’ve read all types of mysteries, from Agatha Christie to Sherlock Holmes. In recent years, I’ve begun to watch TV shows with paranormal themes. My favorites are The Originals and Supernatural. They combine horror with wit.

I have always found it hard to find books that offer mystery in paranormal settings. That’s why I decided to write a paranormal, murder mystery of my own. My book, The Dead Game, has dead bodies, clues, and suspects like a traditional murder mystery. However, it also has humans, vampires, and vampire derivatives. A little humor is added along the way. And don’t forget the haunted house—we must have one of these.

Can you tell us about your books? What other projects are you working on?

The Dead Game is the first in a series of three books. The first book resolves the murder mystery, but at the same time, opens a Pandora’s Box of new mysteries. Its surprise ending will lead to more surprises.

Once The Dead Game is established in the marketplace, I will begin my work on the second book. I have an outline and notes all ready to be written. My writing often leads me in unknown directions, so I won’t know how the book will end until it does.

The story opens with a horrific scene at End House, setting the stage for the rest of the book. End House is situated in an idyllic town in Florida, where tourists frolic on its white-sand beaches. But this paradise turns deadly as bodies wash up on shore. The small town is ravaged by winds and dark shadows.

cover

Three young women move to Oasis for its secluded white-sand beaches. What they find is anything but peace and quiet. They and their new friends are invited to a party at a deserted house. That is when the fun and games begin. They are thrust into a deadly game between humans, vampires, and The Dead.

Linda wants to find a new home and to trust Todd, who might be the ring leader of the evil group. Shana wants love with Sheriff Sam, but he is too close with the nocturnal, original residents. And Louise finds that she doesn’t fit into this small town of secrets and intrigue.

Do they uncover The Dead and save their town? Or are they sucked into the descending realms of the supernatural?

The Dead Game has begun.

Can you tell us one or two quirky thing about yourself? Other hobbies besides writing?

Besides reading and writing, I enjoy shopping, mostly for handbags, and swimming. Swimming gives me the strength to shop and write.

What’s one thing about writing you would have liked to have known before getting behind the computer?

I hadn’t realized beforehand that writing a book was so hard. Characters have to move around and speak at the same time. They can’t sound the same. After all the rewrites, the plot and story of my book has remained the same. Only the dialogue and grammar have changed. I believe I could edit for the rest of my life and still not be satisfied.

The writing and publishing process has been a steep learning curve for me. But I would not have had it any other way.

Did you go traditional or self-publish?

I published through Outskirts Press.com, which is a do-it-yourself type of self-publishing house. Once my book had been improved, I was offered a menu of services to choose from. Most of these were expensive. I picked editing and their publishing service. Everything else had to be chosen a la carte.

One day, the publisher informed me that my book had been published. I thought that this meant it was printed. Not only was it printed, it was sitting on Amazon and Nook without a description or bio. It looked sad. I panicked. I had to learn how to use Google. I opened blogs. I found Facebook and Twitter. Luckily, I found some nice authors who helped me with my countless questions.

Advice to those looking to break into your genre? On marketing and selling?

It is important for an author to have everything in place before launching his or her book. I learned the hard way after I self-published. Blogs, websites, and social sites like Google and Twitter should be ready and waiting. Summaries and bios should also be prepared in advance. After the book is released, it should be announced everywhere with bold pictures and words. People will be ready and eager to read it. That’s my goal for my next book, which will be the second book in The Dead Game series.

How can readers get into contact with you?

My readers can find me through my blogs, Twitter, Facebook, and Google. I respond to all questions and remarks. I love to interact with my followers and read their opinions.
