The Dead Game

By Susanne Leist

This book, “The Dead Game” would make an excellent horror movie. I just could not get enough of it, and would love to see it on the silver screen. In fact, I think it would be even more fantastic in 3 dimensional.

Let me start by saying: I read this in the dark, along with one light on and in a big house. Wait, did I mention I was alone? I might suggest that , you might not want to do that. I’m just sayin…

Just let me be frank with you here. Okay, wait. I still want to be me. Here goes. I honestly love watching TV, and I know what would make for a good show, or movie. And as I was reading this, I was just so totally freaking out all through it, I could totally visualize everything. I know this book would be amazing as a Movie, you seriously need to read it, because you know it goes. When they turn books into Movies, they ruin them. And if the words are this good, you need to read them now!

Another thing that I loved about this book, was the fact that it is portrayed in Oasis, Florida. As most of you know, I am I currently live in Florida. So I love it when books put Florida, or Ohio on the map, I’m in.

This book, “The Dead Game” has Vampires, Beachfront property, a scary haunted mansion, dead bodies, romance and of course people. What a unique kind of mix.

But let me tell you, never ever go to a place called: “End house” and never attend a party on a Friday night where the invitation envelopes are black. I mean if that doesn’t just say: “It’s going to get weird.” As a warning, then nothing will.

I was so impressed, with “The Dead Game”, I couldn’t put it down. I give it five stars, it was just that exciting. If you’re anything like me, and enjoy horror, with a kick, then you need to read this. And you better be ready to get comfortable, because you’re not going to want to put this book down! It’s just that enjoyable.

My Questions for Susanne:

  1. What made you decide to write this book?

I have always been an avid reader. I grew up on Agatha Christie and Sherlock Holmes. In recent years, I began to read paranormal books. They bring fantasy and the surreal to life. But few combine paranormal with the classic murder mystery. I decided to write a paranormal, murder mystery of my own. It’s the type of book that I search for and love to read. Seven long years later, The Dead Game was born.

The Dead Game has dead bodies and suspects like a traditional murder mystery. However, it also has humans, vampires, and vampire derivatives. And don’t forget the haunted house—we must have one of these.

  1. What are you working on now?

The Dead Game is the first book of three books. The first book resolves the murder mystery, but at the same time, opens a Pandora box of new mysteries. Its surprise ending will lead to more surprises.

I have just begun to write the second book. I have my outline and notes ready and waiting. My writing often leads me in unknown directions, so I won’t know how the book will end until it does. But so far, the second book is slated to resolve the mysteries of The Dead in the United States. The last book will follow The Dead and their deadly activities abroad.

  1. What are your hobbies?

I love to swim and read books.

  1. Who is/are your favorite Author(s)?

The murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie was the first murder mystery I read. I was ten years old. Soon after, I read most of her collection. And she had one big collection. My love for murder mysteries continued with Arthur Conan Doyle and Alistair Maclean. These books taught me how to analyze clues and crime scenes.

Today, my favorite authors are Brad Meltzer and Linda Fairstein. Brad Meltzer’s Zero Game prompted me to write my own book. He doesn’t write in a pompous way. He follows through with the plot and clues. I was inspired.

  1. What education have you had?

My first career was in Finance. I have an M.B.A. in Finance. I worked in the fields of commodities, financial analysis, and budgeting. The creative side of me felt trapped and wanted to be set free. I listened and wrote my first book, The Dead Game, a paranormal mystery/thriller with vampires and human vampires.

I am married with two beautiful daughters. My oldest is married and is a buyer. My second has just graduated from college.

     My life is complete.

  1. What do you suggest for anyone thinking of or wanting to write a book?

The best advice for a new writer is to have everything in place before you launch your book. I had nothing ready when I was told that my book was being published. I had to learn how to use Twitter, Facebook, and Google. I created blogs. I read articles and books about marketing books. I now have blogs on Tumblr, Blogspot, and WordPress. It was a year later before I was able to sit back and take a breath.

My advice to a new author is to have everything in place before your book is published. Blogs and online accounts should be open and ready. It shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone but an anticipated event.

7. Are you familiar with Oasis, Florida?

There could be a town in Florida, where residents hide during the day and come out at night. Dark shadows roam the streets after the sun sets for the evenings. Dead bodies roll in with the tides and settle in the white sand. Beach communities have sunshine during the day and trade winds at night. The rest of the story could easily be the result of someone’s imagination: my over-active imagination.

8. What scares you?

Death scares me, but not the type of death in my book. Death by vampire is a good way for me to deal with my fears. Here’s to the bloodsuckers!

HHAC Day 11: Susanne Leist

http://www.richardschiver.com/2015/10/hhac-day-11-susan-leist.html

I’ve been reading murder mysteries and thrillers since I was a teenager. I’ve read all types of mysteries, from Agatha Christie to Sherlock Holmes. I always loved Columbo.

In recent years, I’ve begun to read paranormal mysteries. These books bring fantasy and the surreal to the simple murder mystery. It’s hard to find books in this genre. That is why I decided to write a paranormal, murder mystery of my own. It is the type of book that I search for and love to read.

My book, The Dead Game, has dead bodies and suspects like a traditional murder mystery. However, it also has humans, vampires, and vampire derivatives. And don’t forget the haunted house–we must have one of these.

Synopsis:
Can you feel your heart beating?

Is it beating too fast?

Do you feel trapped?

This is because you are. You’re standing in a pool of water, in the basement of End House, wearing your party clothes. But there is no party, no host, and no guests. The door behind you locks shut. The only way is forward, through the falling cages with their sharp edges, ready to ensnare their next victim. Circular saws begin to descend, looking for heads to slice off.

Meanwhile, Linda is upstairs with the rest of her friends being pursued by creatures through revolving rooms. Or are they illusions? What should she do?

Run!

The owner of End House takes no prisoners.

The Dead Game has begun.

“I leave the storefronts behind,
With their pastel colors and shiny windows.
Windows eager to let in the famous Oasis sunlight.
I want to reach the beach.
I want to leave work and troubles behind me.
The sand will trickle through my toes.
The sea breeze will propel me forward
To the every-waiting, omniscient ocean.
The waves dance and writhe in their demented dance.
A dance growing wilder and wilder by the minute.
I feel their salty sweat on my face.
The trees join in,
Flapping their branches as if trying to hold hands.
The wind follows last with a rage of its own.
It torments the water and the trees
Until leaves are flying free
And waves are attacking the shore.
Why is this happening?
I should go back to town.
The town behind me is being plummeted.
Roof tops are flying through the air.
Glass crunches beneath my feet.
Windows hang broken and twisted.
The saddest sight is the church.
The once white church stands charcoal black
In the midst of its debris.
A day went terribly wrong.
Whose fault is it?
The creatures who visit our town at night.
They are determined to destroy each and every one of us.
Are they demons or humans?
Who knows?
Oasis will never be safe unless these evil ones are annihilated.
We must save our town.
I have friends who will help me.
There are those who doubt our wisdom and abilities.
But we will clean out the riffraff from town.
Don’t get in our way or you might join the garbage.”
Linda turns to find her friends.
Our games have just begun.

I had the best surprise today. A fellow author had asked me if I would allow him to read my book on his podcast. I said, “sure.” Many people have offered promotions but most don’t turn into anything. This time it turned out better than any of my expectations.

I never listened to a podcast before, so I didn’t know what to expect. I tuned in. A man with a melodic voice and an English accent was speaking. He introduced himself. When I heard “The Dead Game by Susanne Leist,” I felt tears spring to my eyes. I was so proud and also embarrassed.

There I was, sitting alone in my house, embarrassed about someone reading my book. It’s been hard enough to find friends and family members willing to read it, but having someone read it out loud was mind-boggling for me. I closed my eyes and listened.

I  became the reader, listening to the story for the first time. By the changing tone of his voice, I was able to tell that he understood the feelings behind the words. He got it! No one was home. I couldn’t yell out that someone was reading my book. I was bubbling over inside.

Not only was I able to see the story through someone’s eyes, I was able to detect the strengths and weaknesses in my writing. It’s one thing to read the story out loud to yourself, but it’s a whole other experience to have someone read it to you. I’m sure this experience will help to make me into a better writer. Thank you, Beren Hollins: Author, Podcaster.

WOE IS THE WORD

Woe is the word that can best describe a room such as this.
A room left to decay without concern or tribute.
A room full of books left unnoticed and uncared for.
Woe is the day when such a deed becomes common place.
For books need to be revered and touched daily.
They need to be cherished and loved.
Woe describes a world where the written word is secondary.
Secondary to silly movies and TV shows.
Secondary to reality stars.
Woe is the feeling in my heart as I look at this room.
I want to pick up all the papers from the floor.
But what is the use if no one cares?

Let’s Welcome Olga Núñez Miret — writer, translator, reader, psychiatrist

Hi all:

First of all thank you very much for taking part in my Blog Tour for Angelic Business 1. Pink Matters. Reader, don’t worry, I’m not here forever, just twisting the arm of your favourite blogger and borrowing a bit of space.

Author Olga Núñez Miret
Author Olga Núñez Miret

My name is Olga Núñez Miret and I’m a writer, translator, reader, psychiatrist, I love movies, plays, fitness, owls and recently have taken up meditation (mindfulness). (I thought I might as well summarise and not take too much of your time). I’ll leave you some links at the end just in case you want to find out even more about me (I’m not sure I’d recommend it, but hey…do your worst!).

I’ve been writing since I was quite young and I write in whatever style the story I have in my head wants to be written in. So far literary fiction, romance, YA, thriller…and a few unfinished works.

Around five years ago I discovered and read quite a few interesting Young Adult books and had an idea for what I thought could be a series. At the time I wrote the first of the novels and after trying to find an agent or a traditional publisher without much success, I started self-publishing, but decided to publish some of my other books first. Since then I’ve published 12 books (6 original books and their translations, as I write in English and Spanish).

I kept thinking about Angelic Business and a few months later wrote the second novel in the series: Shades of Greg. (No, nothing to do with…)

And last year, as part of NaNoWriMo I wrote the third novel in the series, Pink, Angel or Demon?

As I had written the three, I thought I’d publish them pretty close to each other so people wouldn’t have to wait to know what happened next (at least not too much).

The three books in the Angelic Business collection are now available for pre-order at the special price of $0.99 each. It’s a bargain price and they’ll go up shortly after publication.

Here, a video:

Don’t worry. My writing is better than my video-creating skills, but as I’d been taking all those pictures of angels, I thought I might as well.

And here, the series:

Angelic Business 1. Pink Matters
Angelic Business 1. Pink Matters

Angelic Business 1. Pink Matters

You are Pink, not the prettiest girl, but smart and with plenty of resources. What do you do when your best male friend offers to have sex with you, because he thinks you’re a lost cause? You plot your revenge with your two best female friends, of course!

It seems you’re in luck when a new and mysterious student appears. And, to top it all, he seems interested in you too. He could take part in the plan. But then, he seems to have a plan of his own… He insists he’s not just an ordinary boy. And what seemed so easy to begin with, gets more and more complicated when Heaven and Hell come knocking at Pink’s door.

Pink Matters is the story of Pink, a 17 year old girl, good student, articulate and smart. What she has never been the centre of attention or made the top ten of the most popular and attractive girls at school. When two guys, both claiming to be angels, insist that she is, indeed, ‘special’, fight for her attention and help and tell her she is the key to the future of the universe, she can’t help but ask: Why me?

And a snippet:

“Who are you?” Lorna asked. Before she could say anything else, she froze as if paralysed. And the same happened to Sylvia.

“Oh no, not again” I said.

“Hi Pink. I’m Azrael. I’m…”

“Let me guess…You’re an angel.”

I could say he smiled but it was more like a white light radiating from between his lips. His voice also seemed slightly “otherworldly”. He was nothing like G. Flesh and blood didn’t seem to be his priority.

“Yes. I am.”

“O…K….And…to what do I owe the pleasure of your visit? If you are going to make an announcement of some sort…I could have done with some notice.”

The light now seemed to radiate from his whole “body” if that was what it was. Somehow his show was much more believable than G’s. And scarier.

“It’s not an announcement as such. But you should know…G…”

“Yes?”

“I know he told you he’s an angel.”

I looked at him. Maybe he was different to G but he could be as annoying as him. And interfering.

“Yes. I also “know” things…In my case it is because “I” am an angel. He has not been truthful about his identity.”

Pink Matters is currently available for pre-order and will be published on the 26th of June 2015 (Amazon time). So, if you’re reading this post after the 26th of June, you’re in luck and can get the book straight away! (I’m also publishing it in other platforms although as their processing speed is different the dates might vary. Do check there or in my website, that I regularly update).

In case you’re intrigued, I leave you the cover (reveal!) and links to the other two books:

Angelic Business 2. Shapes of Greg
Angelic Business 2. Shapes of Greg

Angelic Business 2. Shapes of Greg

What more could happen after the death and resurrection of your mother? What could Heaven and Hell toss at Pink to top that? Well, to start with, she gets a new hellish babysitter, who is seriously hot. And although everybody likes him, he only has eyes for her. When she learns what the price was for the ‘miracle’ of saving her mother, she realises that she must be careful, as Hell doesn’t lose gracefully.

One of her friends wants to find the perfect man, the other one gets into a relationship she refuses to talk about, there’s a demon who doesn’t know when to give up and an angel who seems to have his own agenda. What on Earth, Hell or Heaven is going on?

Shapes of Greg is available for pre-order and will be published on the 15th of July.

And last, but not least:

Angelic Business 3: Pink, Angel or Demon?
Angelic Business 3: Pink, Angel or Demon?

Angelic Business 3. Pink, Angel or Demon?

OK, OK, OK. Pink gets it. She’s the Elected, whether she likes it or no. Heaven and Hell are closing in, and their envois are closer home than ever. So close she can’t ignore them. And she’ll do everything but.

However long she has, she’s determined to make it count. She’ll sort her friends out, she’ll help her family and, she’ll live a bit. And then, she’ll take charge. Because no one will say that Pink went down without a fight. However big and bad the enemy.

Gender benders, romances, old loves that come to fruition, new challenges, divine interventions, tears, laughter and magic. All of that and more. Because, if you’re gonna go, you might as well go with a bang.

Pink, Angel or Demon? is available for pre-order and will be published on the 30th July.

ODE TO MY BOOK

Nothing can be as fine

As the dear book of mine.

It might not be sold in a big bookstore,

But you will not find one to offer more.

It was created with much love and hope,

Even though it wasn’t blessed by a Pope.

It has my blood, sweat, and tears.

Might raise many of your fears.

It has action, murder, and romance.

I can even do a little dance.

Please try it and you’ll see

It has the best of me.

THE DEAD GAME

A BOOK IS A TREASURE

A long journey to become an author.
Days of soul searching and hard work.
The words need to be enticing and clear.
A bridge to the reader’s heart.

A movie camera sweeps across scenes.
So does a book’s point of view.
One point of view shows one angle.
Changing points of view can reveal many more.

To be lost in a book is truly a gift.
An escape from the mundane and boring.
A visit to far away places.
An adventure to open your mind’s eye.

Once completed, a book is a treasure.
A symbol of an author’s hopes and dreams.
A confectioner’s delight to be tasted and savored.
To be remembered by many or just a few.

5 STAR REVIEW OF THE DEAD GAME

March 27, 2015
Format: Kindle EditionVerified Purchase
Susanne Leist has written a novel that kept me glued to the page. The illusions of the main character about the safe and secure small town she’s moved to get shattered in a profound way when people start disappearing. What happens after dark and the creatures that prey upon them were frightening but also kept me guessing. The author has a very creative mind with so many twists and turns to her story that I was hooked. It’s far from predictable. The Dead Game is suspenseful, creative, and a good read. You won’t regret buying this novel.
