THE OASIS HOTEL

THE OASIS HOTEL

The white hotel on the beach

has everything within reach.

A swimming pool in the sun

offers fun in the hot sun.

The night brings a different story

of The Dead in all their glory.

They come to scare the town,

cold stares served with a frown.

Beware of the walking dead.

They are evil ones to dread.

A CLOSED DOOR

A closed door.
What could be on the other side?
Should we knock?
Is the house deserted?
Is someone waiting inside?
Linda and her friends knock on the door.
It opens on its own.
No one is there to greet them.
A red carpeted staircase protected by gargoyles.
A long hallway lit by candles.
They step inside.
This is their first mistake.

THE DEAD GAME

OUR GAMES HAVE JUST BEGUN — THE DEAD GAME — PART 49

A simple evening walk.
A time to breathe the fresh air.
The streets beckon to me
With their soothing lights.

Yellow glows of love and laughter are
Reflected in dancing spots on wet cobblestones.
Spots of light that I can never call my own
As they bounce away from my reaching hands.

A peek in the windows confirms my suspicion
Of lives lived to the fullest.
Meals enjoyed and savored,
Bringing family members even closer.

I walk alone in the night.
No one’s hand to hold.
No meals to share.
My thoughts are all for myself.

I will search for my friends,
Each one of us lonely beings in a small town,
Where family is the desired way of life,
And loneliness is scorned upon.

I am no longer alone.
Footsteps are following me,
The long strides of a man.
Moving closer with each step.
Soon he’ll be upon me.

I run down the slippery stairs,
Desperate to outrun my stalker.
He is right behind me.
I shudder before I slip and fall.

I roll down two flights of stairs
To land in a ball at the bottom.
I’m terrified to lift my head
Or check my bruised knees.

Someone squats down beside to me.
An arm encircles my shoulders.
I feel warm and sheltered.
I peek through the mess of my hair,
And I recognize Todd.

A man who has saved me countless times.
A man of few words and no fears.
A man I want to trust but can’t.
He helps me stand up.

I am wrapped in his strong arms.
Soothed by his soft voice.
It is hard to stay strong and aloof.
It is so hard to be independent.

He looks over my bruises.
He leads me to the hospital.
A few stitches and I’m free.
Free to leave with Todd.

Todd drives me home to his apartment.
Few words are spoken between us.
We don’t need words to explain our thoughts.
A touch, a smile, a wink is all we need.

He puts me into his bed and leaves.
I wait for his return.
I hear him moving about the apartment.
I’m left alone until the morning light.

At midnight, I have an awful dream,
Where Wolf attacks Todd.
He takes me in his arms
And we fly away to a place in the stars.

Wolf has evil inside him.
This evil drives him to do
Unspeakable things to humans.
To me, he’s always been compassionate.

Thank god it is only a dream.
It is Todd who walks into the room and not Wolf.
He asks how I feel  and is happy with my answer.
I tell him I’m ready to go home.

His face fills with a scowl.
“You’re not safe to be living on your own.
Wolf might return at any moment.”

“If he wanted me,
He could’ve taken me at any time.
But he didn’t.
I’m going home.”
I gather my clothes to get dressed.

“No! I will stay with you.
Todd stands firm with his hands on his hips.
He must always get his way,
But this time he won’t.

We walk by the beach to reach my apartment.
The winds are playing their games again.
The howling winds are shaking the trees so hard
That leaves and limbs flee for their lives.

Wolf appears before us,
Circled by thrashing winds,
Lit up from lightning strikes
In colors of orange, yellow, and green.

He doesn’t appear human,
But an omnipotent supernatural force.
He raises his arms to increase the winds.
His shouts intensify the lightning and thunder.

I cannot move.
I’m stuck in the sand.
Todd is trying to move.
Wolf laughs and blows Todd into the ocean.

I scream and scream.
Louder than ever before.
In a higher pitch.
He will not win again.

Wolf saunters over to me.
His swagger sickens me.
He takes me in his arms
And covers my lips with his.

He is taking control of my mind.
My strength is oozing out of my body.
I don’t want to fight anymore.
I give in.

Wolf lifts me in his arms
And gives a hearty roar.
He takes me to the skies,
Where others of his kind wait.

I look down to Earth
For any sign of my friends or Todd.
I can see no one.
But I know they won’t give up on me.

THE DEAD GAME

OUR GAMES HAVE JUST BEGUN — THE DEAD GAME — PART 45

Do my eyes deceive me?
Can this be true?
A creature is stalking me
Through the dark streets of town.

Eyes black as night.
Cries as soft as the wind.
Sharp claws tapping a sad melody.
It draws closer to me still.

The mansion’s gates yawn open for me.
My feet leave tracks in the mud.
Handprints where I fall in my haste.
Salty tears on the rocks.

The mansion waits in its dark glory
For the innocent and weary.
It sheds its shell like a caterpillar,
But no butterfly does it become.

The creature gains ground.
Stalking in its feline way.
Whiskers in the wind,
Leading its way to me.

One last stumble for me.
My knees graze the rocks.
My fingers climb the steps,
Digging deep into the dirt.

I turn one last time.
The dark one stands up.
Becoming taller and straighter.
On two feet it stands tall.

Its yellow eyes glimmer black.
No whiskers to follow my scent.
White skin for black fur.
Laughter falls from its lips.

He has come for me one last time.
He walks on muscled legs.
Sure and strong is his gait.
For no more does he crawl.

“Come to me!” he says.
“No more games for us to play.”
His hand reaches for mine
As I wait for this game to end.

“I refuse to belong to you.”
My voice shakes in despair.
I will not be a follower
Of The Dead and long gone.

The house swallows me whole.
I am hidden inside its walls.
A maze of rooms for shelter.
Darkness to shield me from harm.

Take me to the other side,
Where right is wrong
And wrong rules the day.

The door creaks open for us,
But should we walk through?
Will we find our answers?

Linda grasps David’s hand,
Hiding behind his tall body.
Mike and Shana follow close behind.

The ground continues to shake.
The walls grumble with rage.
Bricks fall too close to her head.

Darkness peers back at them
From the other side,
A quivering body of blackness.

Dark shadows move
And sway with the music.
Music they can only hear.

David steps through the doorway.
He stops and opens his arms wide.
A soft sigh escapes his lips.

People move through the shadows,
Moving together as one.
A light from above highlights their faces.

It can’t be!
I must be living a dream
Or maybe a nightmare.

Linda shakes her head.
She will not go inside.
The game is over for her.

OUR GAMES HAVE JUST BEGUN — THE DEAD GAME — PART 35

Brutal winds follow close on my heels,
Thunder and lightning joining the crusade.
Fluorescent lights paint the night sky,
Rings of orange, yellow, and red.

A vortex of horror in unending circles,
Making its way to the small town of Oasis,
Where I will be waiting with sword in hand,
Secure in the knowledge that Wolf won’t win.

The Watchers have joined the battle.
I can see them on the hill beyond.
Their raincoats flapping in the wind,
Concealing their hidden weapons.

We will protect Linda from the devil,
All standing strong in the fighting winds.
The Father clutches his bible of spells
To help cast the evil from our town.

Humans, vampires, and human vampires.
We have come together as one.
The last battle on this earthly planet
That will determine the fate of us all.

Linda holds on to her close friends,
Huddled together in the raging winds.
Will she choose wisely and correctly?
Will she choose me above The Dead?

The time has come for the showdown.
Time has slowed to a halt.
We raise our weapons above our heads,
Waiting for evil to make its final appearance.

Wolf seems to have been given a new body.
I still recognize his deadly soul.
A new package for an old one
Does not change the battle to be won.

Our games have just begun.

THE DEAD GAME

THE HUNT

THE HUNT

It first comes slowly
In the dead of night.
Walking on silent feet.
It draws closer.
You run faster.
It speeds up.
You dash into a building.
An empty school.
It soon follows.
It brings with it a silence.
You can feel its presence.
Coming closer.
It’s now moving quickly.
Down the deserted hallway.
You check the doors.
They are all locked.
You turn.
Close your eyes.
And stand strong.
Darkness descends.

LET US OUT

LET US OUT

The walls hold us tight,
Though we still must fight.
Cement and mortar keep us in.
But we are more afraid of him.

He has trapped us inside.
From him we run and hide.
He is the cult leader of The Dead.
He lurks in each and every head.

He’s still unknown to us.
Help us without a fuss.
Please save us from our certain doom.
We’re tired from the doom and gloom.

We can hear his footsteps in the distance.
We can’t help you with any resistance.
You must fight the battle for us all.
Many will be freed but some may fall.

THE DEAD GAME

TAKE ME DOWN TO THE BASEMENT

Darkness, my old friend

TAKE ME DOWN TO THE BASEMENT

Please take me down the basement stairs,
Where I could face my deep, dark fears.
I heard there were traps and sharp saws,
Where animals have lost their paws.
A head might be rolling by,
Could those be two rolling eyes?
I’m too afraid and want to leave
This awful place of make believe.

SLEEPY OR SCARY

A Keyhole

SLEEPY OR SCARY

Look through the keyhole
And what do you see?
A place as perfect as can be.
A small town by the sea.

Palm trees waving in the breeze
Lulling the tourists to sleep.
A sleep soon be to interrupted
By The Dead.

They come out at night.
Hiding in their homes at day.
Are they human or vampire?
Or maybe a combination of both?

Their nocturnal activities
Will not be soothing
Or healthy for the sleepy town.
So don’t let down your guard
For The Dead have come to play
And they take no prisoners.
