The house comes alive.
Snakes slither in cages.
Human-eating plants stand at attention.
Tree limbs grab my arms.
Roots wrap around my legs.
What’s next?
Quicksand?

We found the exit from the house.
We’ll sneak as quiet as a mouse.
The owner must not know we’re gone.
He’ll chase us to death and beyond.
We’ll crawl by the rocks to the sea
and make our way back in time for tea.
End House won’t hold us anymore.
We’ve seen enough horror and gore.

Stop me.
Imprison me.
Cage me.
Bury me.
Beneath the house.
In the dungeons.
In hell.
But I will return.
To take the town back.
The Dead will return.
And so will I.
PREY FOR THE DEAD
Imprisoned beneath the earth.
Trapped for centuries.
A family lost to darkness.
Stuck between worlds.
For eternity.
Only one could save them.
PREY FOR THE DEAD by Susanne Leist
I must escape this hell.
where The Dead trap me,
try to snare me
with their evil ways.
I must find a way out
of this dungeon
to the world above.
The angels will show the way.
Angels above,
angels below,
please help me.

Chair
Down the rabbit hole we go.
Far down beneath the earth’s surface.
Where The Dead wait for their savior.
Arms extended.
Reaching for us.
Mouths held open in silent cries.
As we fall farther.
Deeper.
Past the point of no return.
THE DEAD GAME
All stories have an end.
This is mine.
I live behind this door.
No one visits.
As footsteps draw near,
I look out the peephole.
I never answer the bell.
I slink away into my dungeon
of lost hopes and dreams.
Neighbors stay away.
My family doesn’t care.
Would you?
The candles on these walls
throw shadows down the halls.
Shadows that float in the air,
horrors that I cannot bear.
Soft sighs follow in their wake,
my insides begin to quake.
Gargoyles stare at us from above,
I’m thrust forward by a hard shove.
Revolving rooms lead us through a maze.
I follow along, lost in a daze.
I ask, “How do we get out of here?”
My hands covering my face in fear.
Am I standing in a flood?
I look down at all the blood.
It flows from the indoor pool.
As you know I’m not a fool.
I’m out of here as quick as can be.
There’s nothing else I want to see.

A DOOR IN THE FOREST
The house is gone.
All that’s left is ash
And the door.
The door to the dungeons.
Where The Dead lived
And died.
I can see dark shadows
In the distance.
Are they coming for us?
I thought they were all gone.
What happened to The Dead?
Are they gone or still lingering?
The earth is rumbling.
The door is shaking.
We’d better leave.
Right Now!

Will I reach the bottom?
Is there even a bottom to this madness?
Who lives beneath End House?
Will I become one of them?
Forever roaming the dark tunnels,
Not really dead but one of the undead.
Into the unyielding darkness comes a cry.
“Stop!”
Linda looks up to see Todd and Shana,
Clinging to the rocky walls.
It was Todd who had called out.
The tunnel dissolves.
The stairs return.
They run down the staircase
And make it to the front door.
Linda pulls on the handle.
It won’t budge.
“Open!”
At Todd’s command,
The door opens for them.
The house pushes them out.
The door slams behind them.
Too terrified to look at Todd,
Linda races ahead to the car.
If Todd has powers,
Then he might be one of The Dead.
He could be evil like the rest of them.
I can’t believe I was actually
Falling for him.
Linda’s problems have only begun.
