SEND IN THE CLOWNS

Daniel Merriam

I open my eyes to strange creatures.

Why are they in my bedroom?

Their thrill laughter makes my skin crawl.

They wave knives at me.

I need to escape.

I can’t.

I’m tied to my bed.

They move closer.

I close my eyes.

Silence fills the room.

I slit my eyes open.

The room is now empty.

I glance at my chair in the corner.

A red balloon is tied to it.

Oh no.

THE CARNIVAL

THE CARNIVAL OF NIGHTMARES
I open my eyes
and to my surprise,
I’m at a carnival.
I’m chased into a tent.
My reflections surround me
on all sides.
I touch a mirror.
My hand flows through,
my body soon follows.
I’m in a dark basement.
The floor begins...

THE CARNIVAL

I open my eyes

and to my surprise,

I’m at a carnival.

I’m chased into a tent.

My reflections surround me

on all sides.

I touch a mirror.

My hand flows through,

my body soon follows.

I’m in a dark basement.

The floor begins to turn.

I hear laughter,

“I’m back.”

SEND IN THE CLOWNS

I open my eyes.

I see circus men.

Why are they in my bedroom?

Soft laughter fills the room.

Clowns are waving knives at me.

I need to escape.

I can’t.

I’m tied to my bed.

They’re coming closer.

The laughter is getting louder.

I close my eyes.

All is quiet.

My eyes open.

The room is dark.

And empty.

I glance over at my chair.

A red balloon is tied to it.

Floating in the air.

Oh no.

I open my eyes.

I see weird creatures.

The man in the moon.

Circus men.

Why are they in my room?

Have they come for me?

To kill me?

I hear laughter.

Hysterical laughter.

The circus men are clowns.

They are waving sharp knives at me.

I need to escape.

I can’t.

I’m tied to my bed.

They’re coming closer.

The laughter is getting louder.

I close my eyes.

The room is quiet.

I open my eyes.

LOST AT A CARNIVAL

merry go round

LOST AT A CARNIVAL

Linda is lost at a carnival.
A carnival of her nightmares.
A clown is leering at her.
The knife-thrower is throwing knives
At her but keeps missing.
She runs into a tent.
Mirrors surround her,
Distorting her reflection.
She runs farther into the darkness,
Crashing through a mirror,
Finally landing in a pitch black room.
The floor begins to spin…
She tries to grab hold of the walls.
They are wet and shiny.
But there’s no way out.

DO YOU SEE A CARNIVAL?

A day of fun for all.
Follow the bouncing ball.
Past booths of games.
To the house of mirrors.
Inside, you’ll find me.
A clown of your nightmares.
Ready to take you on a tour.
That will lead to endless games.
And endless horrors.
This isn’t a carnival.
But a voyage into your nightmares.
Buckle up.
Enjoy the ride.
