The Dead at Heart by Susanne Leist is the third installment of this cleverly crafted supernatural series. Fans of the author are acquainted with her parallel universes in which mortals and nocturnal creatures live side by side in a fragile existence. In this episode, the vampire stronghold of Oasis finds itself under attack by mysterious forces. Sheriff Sam sets out in pursuit of the werewolf team that kidnapped the lady of the estate. He asks Shana for assistance as her beloved William is suspected of complicity. She accompanies him on a hair-raising chase from the swamps of Florida to the historic city of Quebec. Shana’s loyalty to William is compromised yet she has no choice to continue the pursuit with Linda’s safety at risk.
The plot thickens as the Watchers, represented by Samantha and the Archangels, intercede with the intent of ending a potential conspiracy among a contingency of rogue vampires. Shana realizes that William may be condemned by the Watchers, yet dares not hamper the search as Linda’s fiance Gregg has joined forces with Sheriff Sam. They soon learn that an autoimmune virus has infected the outlaws and caused their insurgency. Proclaimed as the Dead by their fellow vampires, Shana fears the worst. Linda moves into Gregg’s mansion. She suggests Shana bring William with her as he recuperates from his last battle. While Gregg, an original vampire, has learned to live with humans, Shana doubts whether William can mend his evil ways. Shana watches the engaged couple with dismay as her arguments with William mount.
After werewolves kidnap Linda, Shana flees with Sheriff Sam, who believes William has been plotting with the werewolves to overthrow the upcoming vampire summit in Quebec.
While Gregg searches for Linda, Shana leaves with Sam for Florida’s swamplands. At a mansion hidden deep in the swamp, The Watchers live in luxury. The vampire leaders take them to a deserted military base, where they board planes for Quebec. At a stand-off at the base, The Watchers capture William and force him to join them.
The planes arrive at Chateau Frontenac in time for the summit. But the separate vampire factions have other plans for the meeting.
As the boardwalk of Chateau Frontenac erupts in flames, the battle begins. Shana must choose the right side since any mistake can become a deadly one.
